The EnterpriseOne CNC Job Description
I started my journey with JD Edwards in the summer of 2000. I was a fairly “green” Systems Admin/Web Developer/Help Desk Technician and it was right after the Y2K scare. The company that I worked for at the time was preparing to start an upgrade from JD Edwards World to JD Edwards OneWorld 7333 without Coexistence. Some of that terminology is old enough that many of you won’t know what I’m talking about. Suffice to say, it was one of the first versions of JD Edwards that was client/server based. We used an IBM AS400 Enterprise Server and Citrix as the way to present the application to the users.
Throughout my IT career I’ve worn many hats and administered a wide variety of systems… most related to supporting JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. There were some years in there that I was responsible for all things internet/web-related which included web development (ASP.Net, VB.Net, C#, PHP, Javascript, HTML, XML, XSLT, etc.) and web server administration (Apache, MySQL, SQL Server, Internet Information Server, SharePoint, etc.). See my resume for more info.
As it relates to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, I’ve been exposed to the development side of things, which has been very valuable in troubleshooting but I would definitely not call myself a “JDE Developer”.
The depth of my experience lies in JD Edwards EnterpriseOne CNC Administration. I’ve been responsible for systems that ran on all combinations of supported hardware & databases. That being said, I would not call myself an “Administrator” of any of the underlying technology that supports JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. I am a Senior JD Edwards CNC Administrator. I do not claim to be a senior level administrator of IBM AS400s, SQL Servers, Oracle Databases, Windows Server, Linux, etc. I have way too much respect for the skills of those that I have relied on to provide my clients, whether internal or external, with a fast, stable JD Edwards EnterpriseOne environment.
Below is an excerpt from a recent job posting for a “JD Edwards Technical Consultant”:
The JD Edwards ERP Specialist is responsible for maintaining the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne platform and auxiliary systems from a development, CNC, system administration, and functional consultant perspective to create and maintain business solutions.
Did you notice that: “…from a development, CNC, system administration, and functional consultant perspective…“. I find these types of expectations totally unreasonable. In over 20 years of IT experience and having the opportunity to work with some absolutely brilliant individuals, I have yet to encounter one person that could reasonably fulfill those requirements. I think that 2-3 might be possible but all four seems unrealistic.
Would you apply for this job or know someone who meets the requirements?
Is it possible to have enough experience to maintain JDE “…from a development, CNC, system administration, and functional consultant perspective…”?
